Become an employee of a highly respected, profitable healthcare network in the beautiful rolling hills just southwest of Penn State University. The network currently manages two hospitals including a smaller, low volume/acuity community hospital and a larger, level 2 trauma center with a 60K annual volume (11K in the fast track). Plans are in the works to consolidate the Emergency Services over the next year in the main facility by doubling the space of the trauma center. The main facility features a recently renovated, expanded physical plant that has a 5-bed fast track and 30 acute care treatment bays including 4 trauma bays expandable to 6. The current expansion will add at least 10 more bays and full in-suite radiology section.
There is a full trauma surgical team on call 24/7. The bulk of the nursing staff is certified CEN. ED physicians are primarily BC or BPEM/residency trained and that continues to be the requirement for any new candidates. Residency grads for 2010 are welcome to apply. Family Practice residents from an in-house program rotate through the ED and the department is a full, EMS base command with only burns, PICU and some transplant patients transferred to the University of Pittsburgh. The ED docs enjoy exceptionally strong support from both the medical staff and hospital administration. There are no consult issues or problems with back-up. ED Physicians utilize the IBEX computerized charting system and also have a system for tele-radiology. The ED has an outside billing service also used by the University of Pittsburgh. The ED sees a high level of geriatric/adult medicine, about 25% pediatrics, and 10% trauma with 95% of the trauma cases being blunt-force trauma. The admission rate is about 24%. Physicians provide a total 60 hours of daily coverage (6 10-hour shifts) in the main ED and there is an additional 24 hours of daily PA coverage. Due to increase in census, 4 additional physicians are being recruited so that coverage can be increased. Physicians work an average of 4 10-hour shifts a week, which comes to 1,650 clinical hours a year after paid leave. There are no mid-level providers; all coverage is physician coverage. Physicians see between 1.8 – 2.2 patients-per-physician-per-hour on average.
Incoming Emergency Physicians earn a salary of $250K and will be immediately eligible to participate in an incentive income program being integrated by early 2010 that will add an additional $50K per year or more. All physicians receive a full benefit package including a total of 430 hours of paid leave! It breaks down to 4 weeks paid vacation, 2 weeks paid CME, 4 personal days, 6 paid holidays and 9 paid sick days. Additional benefits include full health, vision and dental insurance including family coverage, life insurance, $3K CME allowance, disability, pension, and $1MM/$3MM occurrence malpractice (which includes tail coverage). A defined retirement package is also provided after one year of service, though an even higher value plan is now being considered. A comprehensive loan payback program is also available for physicians interested in a multi-year contract.
