the April doldrums

It’s one day before April Fool’s and I’m feeling like I should close up shop and jump on a slow boat to China; except I’d really rather go to Australia or Vienna.  There is no shortage of openings for emergency physicians but there is definitely a shortage of emergency physicians for those openings.  Despite the strength of this spring market, many docs seem reluctant to look.  I blame uncertainty.  .  . about the new health care changes, about the economy, about what’s potentially coming down the road in general.   There is no question that the demand for great docs is going to continue to grow now and in the future.  Employers are going to have to step up to the plate and do whatever is in their capability to attract the best of the best.  Soon I’ll start the research for the annual marketplace reports in Emergency Medicine News.  it should be an interesting series this year!
